Robert Bruce “Bob” Avakian (born on March 7 1943) is a politician who has served as the leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA (RCP) since 1979. As the RCP’s Chairman, Avakian developed the organization’s official ideology, a theoretic structure that is rooted in Maoism that is known as “the New Synthesis” or the “New Communism.” As a result of the New Left, Avakian has written a variety of books in the past forty years which include an autobiography.

The year 2005 was the time that Avakian released an autobiography entitled”From Ike through Mao and Beyond My Life through Mainstream America into a Revolutionary Communist. Avakian has served as the chief of the central committee and the leader of its national leadership since 1979. In 2016 members of the Revolutionary Communist Party USA and others joined forces to create the organization Refuse Fascism which is opposed to the president Donald Trump.

Avakian is the main character as a character in the movie Panther produced by Mario Van Peebles.

As a young man Avakian was involved in his community of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) at Berkeley and The Free Speech Movement and the Black Panther Party. He was a member of the Free Speech Movement in 1968. composed essays for publications of the Peace and Free Party,. Also, during July of 1969, Avakian gave a speech in the Black Panther conference in Oakland, California. At the time when SDS was split into three factions during summer in 1969 Avakian had become a prominent participant in the Revolutionary Youth Movement II faction and was also their nominee for the office of National Secretary. Though he was disqualified from the position of National Secretary from Mark Rudd of the faction that was later known by the name of Weatherman, Avakian was elected to the National Interim Committee. In the time of his election, Avakian was a leading participant in the Bay Area Revolutionary Union.

In the beginning of the 1970s Avakian was sentenced to prison for desecration of the American flag at a protest. Avakian was charged with beating a police officer in January 1979, during an event at Washington, D.C. to protest Deng Xiaoping’s visit to Jimmy Carter. After being issued an order to arrest him, Avakian “jumped bail” and fled to France. In the year 1980, he made an address to 200 protesters in the city center of Oakland and his assault on police charges were dismissed a couple of years after.
