William Lee Gullickson (born February 20th 1959, in Marshall, Minnesota) is an ex-major league baseball player who was a part of six different major league teams in Canada as well as in the U.S. and Japan, over the course of an 18-year professional career that included 14 seasons which were in MLB.
On the 12th of December of 1985 Gullickson became the target of the Reds along with the catcher Sal Butera; the Reds were able to send the pitchers Andy McGaffigan and John Stuper as well as the catcher Dann Bilardello over to the Expos. Gullickson was 15-12 with Reds. He had an ERA of 3.38. Reds having an ERA of 3.38 Gullickson was 10-11 when the Reds traded him mid-season to the New York Yankees in 1987 .
Gullickson signed as a free agent with the Houston Astros after the 1989 season, and had a mediocre 1990 season before being released. He then signed a multimillion-dollar contract with the Detroit Tigers, with whom he pitched for four seasons. While with the Tigers he met a young boy, who was then 12, who also had diabetes, and talked to him for two minutes. It was future major leaguer Sam Fuld, who battled to make the Cubs’ 2008 team. “That was enough to inspire me”, Fuld said. “Any time I can talk to young diabetic kids, I look forward to that opportunity.”
In 1991 Gullickson led the American League in wins, with 20, his career high, but in 1994 was forced to retire due to injuries, at age 35.
The year was 1981 and he led the Expos to their first divisional championship with an 8-9, 2.81 record. The Expos fell in to the National League Championship Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. With the exception of the strike in 1981 year, Gullickson was in double numbers in wins from each year from 1981 onward.

Gullickson was chosen to be the 2nd player to be selected during the initial round of June’s 1977 Major League Baseball draft by the Montreal Expos, out of Joliet Catholic Academy in Joliet, Illinois.
He was second to Steve Howe in the National League Rookie of the Year poll in 1980, following his season, in which he was 10-5 and an earned run-adjusted average (ERA) of 3.00 and also established a major league record for the highest number of strikeouts in an entire game played by rookies, which was 18. Gullickson was the record holder for 18 years until Kerry Wood broke it with 20 strikeouts in 1998. Gullickson had the Montreal Expos-Washington Nationals ‘ all-time strikeout record for one game that had 18 strikeouts up before Max Scherzer broke the record in the year 2016.
On August 26, 1987 Gullickson was acquired by the New York Yankees who sent Dennis Rasmussen to the Reds. for their 1987 pennant drive.
