Bhakti Tirtha Swami is one of the most popular and richest Guru who was born on February 25, 1950 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Bhakti Tirtha Swami was born John Edwin Favors on February 25, 1950 to the Christian family within Cleveland, Ohio, US. His parents taught him the principles of self-confidence and faith, as well as an attitude of generosity that was demonstrated by giving to those less fortunate than themselves. As a young man, John Favors appeared on television to talk about Christianity. He did exceptionally well in his academic performance when he was a student at East Technical High School in Cleveland and was awarded an award to attend the famous Hawken School, where he completed an additional year of college- preparation in the fields of philosophy and political science. While at Hawken the school, he was a player on the wrestling and football teams.

On the 13th of March in 1979, during Gaura-purnima, a festival held at New Vrindaban, he was admitted to the Vaishnava Sannyasa sannyasa sannyasa ren at the hands of Kirtanananda Swami and given the name Bhakti Tirtha Swami. In the same year he became the very first devotee from the Hare Krishna Movement to visit Nigeria and give a sermon there. He was crowned in 1990. was elected as the high chief of Warri, Nigeria. He later went on to become a leader of the highest rank as well as one of the more well-known preachers in ISKCON and also a member of its management committee called the Governing Body Commission. He was the first person of African descent to become an initiating guru in the disciplic succession of the ancient Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya. As a spiritual leader, Bhakti-tirtha Swami had a relationship with famous people and was spiritual advisor, specialising with international relationships and conflict-resolution for senior individuals of the United Nations and world leaders such as former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela. Former member of ISKCON Nori Muster was a 10 years as a Public Relations Secretary and Editor for ISKCON’s journal ISKCON World Review. In 1990, Bhakti Tirtha Swami was crowned High Chief in Warri, Nigeria, West Africa in recognition of the reputable work he performed there. Bhakti Tirtha Swami died June 27, 2005, of complications from melanoma, at Gita Nagari, the Gaudiya Vaishnava community in central Pennsylvania. Bhakti Tirtha Swami is survived by four sisters, Bernadette Satterfield, Julia Henderson, Frances Myers, and Marguerite Brooks; a brother, Paul Favors; and numerous nieces and nephews.

On February 7, 2006, the Council of the District of Columbia adopted ceremonial resolution, in which it “recognized His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Swami Krishnapada for dedication to social change that has impacted civil and human rights for residents in the District of Columbia”.

In the course of attending university lectures and reading books on various topics, “he began feeling the futility of acquiring knowledge, which would become obsolete very soon”. After Princeton began, he joined in the Hare Krishna Movement and “began a career of worldwide travel, study, teaching, lecturing, and writing”. In February 1973, in Los Angeles he was initiated into the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition by ISKCON’s founder A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, whereupon he was named Ghanashyam Dasa (meaning the servant to Krishna). Through the 70s, Ghanashyam Diez preached Gaudiya Vaishnavism across Eastern Europe by distributing religious books and working with academics.

In 1968, he enrolled at Princeton University. While at Princeton was a participant as an active participant in the civil rights campaign, and was “at the forefront of political activism on campus, a leader of the Association of Black Collegians (ABC) and a founder of the Third World Center”. He was also a student council president. He graduated in 1972 and graduated with an B.A. in psychology as well as African American studies.

He died following complications from melanoma cancer on June 27, 2005, 3:35pm at Gita Nagari, the Krishna community in Pennsylvania.
