Beverley Whitfield is one of the most popular and richest Swimmer who was born on June 15, 1954 in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Beverley Joy Whitfield (15 June 1954 20th June 1954 – 20th August, 1996) was an Australian breaststroke swimmer from the 1970s. She won the silver medal for her 200-meter breaststroke in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. She was coach by Terry Gathercole and Don Talbot.

Whitfield went on to win both breaststroke titles in the 1970 Australian Championships in times of 1 1 18.5 seconds and 2 m 48 s , respectively. Then she went on a tour of South Africa with the national team and won the same titles during the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in time of 1 one-minute 17.4 seconds and 2 1 44.2 in each. She knocked the England’s Dorothy Harrison to silver in setting new Commonwealth records in both events. Whitfield won her 3rd gold in the 4×100 metre Medley relay, which included Lynne Watson Alyson Mabb as well as Denise Langford with a time of 4 meters 30.66 in. Whitfield continued her winning streak in 1971, winning her place in her first Australian Championships in both breaststroke events, though the times she posted were less than those those in Edinburgh. The third gold medal was awarded to her New South Wales team in the Medley relay.

This was Whitfield’s career peak. She won both breaststroke titles the following year at the Australian Championships in times slower than she had recorded in Munich, but failed to win a medal at the 1973 World Aquatics Championships in Belgrade. Again in 1974, she won both events at the national championships in even slower times, but managed only a bronze in the 200-metre event in a time of 2 m 43.58 s and a silver in the medley relay. In 1975, she lost both of her national titles, and subsequently retired, admitting that she had lost her drive to compete.

Whitfield was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1995. She died suddenly in 1996 at the age of 42.

In 1969, the young woman was appointed an instructor in the swimming pool of Midland, Texas, forcing Whitfield’s father to raise money so that she could travel to Texas and live with his family for their training. She stayed there for six weeks, where she improved her race abilities by racing more frequently in the highly intense American scene. Her improvement saw her place sixth and third in the 100-metre and 200-metrebreaststroke respectively at the US Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. After her return back to Australia on November 29, 1969 Gathercole made arrangements for her to work in the direction of Don Talbot. Whitfield discovered Talbot as a tough-pushing instructor: “I both hated and loved him. Terry Gathercole and Don Talbot had two different approaches. With Don I had to do all the strokes, the same number of repetitions and the same as everyone else was doing. I was exhausted.”

Whitfield displayed a preference for the breaststroke since a young age, and would often do the breaststroke when performing freestyle exercises. Whitfield showed a greater enthusiasm for sports during her time at the Shellharbour Primary School playing netball, softball, athletics, and even cricket with her male peers. But, all of this was cut off when she was nearing the end of her primary school days and swimming came to the forefront. When she was nine years old, Whitfield competed in the Primary School State Championships at North Sydney Pool, coming second only to Kathy Whitlam, who happened to be the daughter of the future the Prime Minister from Australia Gough Whitlam. At 10 years old, Whitfield was able to witness the Australian’s Dawn Fraser win her third consecutive 100-meter freestyle Olympic gold medal in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Sydney, becoming one of the very first Olympian to be crowned the winner of an individual event three times in succession, which gave her the confidence to be an Olympian.

At 11 years old, her uncle made the decision to send her to Sydney every weekend for instruction with Terry Gathercole, an Olympic medalist in breaststroke who was known as the most renowned breaststroke coach in Australia. It was a long-distance day trip for her family members to assist her in achieving her goal and usually beginning before the break of dawn. In the holiday breaks, she would board with Gathercole to work with his guidance on a regular basis. The first time she trained with Gathercole, she came in third overall in the 100-metre butterfly at her age category during the New South Wales Championships. Her progress was swift, and in the year 1968 she took the 200-metre and 100-metre breaststroke races in the under-14 age group during the State championships. She then placed first in her age category at the national championships in Hobart. Then she made it towards the open Australian Championships, which were the trials for selection to members of the Olympics team. At 14 years old She narrowly missed being selected to compete in at the 1948 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City, after finishing third and sixth in the 200-metre and 100-metre breaststroke trials.

She competed at the International Coca-Cola Meet at Crystal Palace in London, taking the bronze medal in the 200-metre breaststroke behind the Soviet Galina Prozumenshchikova, the world record holder. Late in 1971, Whitfields’ rival Harrison came to Australia on a Churchill Fellowship and trained alongside her with Talbot. At the 1972 Australian Championships, Harrison took both the 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke titles from Whitfield. Whitfield gradually improved her times in the lead up to the 1972 Summer Olympics during the Australian training camp in Scarborough, Queensland.
