Bernardo Mercado (born January 16 1952) is an ex-fighter in the heavyweight division who was named the most likely contender to be crowned champion in the year 1980 by the WBC.
He then went on to take on the futurist champs Mike Weaver and Trevor Berbick beating Berbick off in the opening round of their match on April 3rd 1979. The following year, the fighter was awarded an eighth round technical knockout against dangerous competitor who was a multiple time world champion opponent Earnie Shavers. Shavers was ranked as the best candidate for Larry Holmes’ WBC belt. He lost an elimination fight against the former champ Leon Spinks by 9 round technical knockout. He went to fight such famous fighters like the legendary Randall “Tex” Cobb and Jimmy Thunder (with whom was he sparred in his final fight on December 8th, 1989).
Of his first 20 matches in the first 20 fights, the 6’4-inch (193 centimeters) power puncher took 17 knockouts, and nine in the opening round. His first loss as a professional was in 1978 at the fate of his future opponent “Big” John Tate.
