Ascribed as an “ball-playing midfielder” in the youth team of Stevenage, Wilmot moved into central defence, where the position was used during his debut season in the first-team of the club. When he signed for Watford the manager Javi Gracia claimed Wilmot Wilmot “has the intelligence” to be a player in the role of a holding midfielder between the two central defense players. The team was then deployed in the 2018-19 season with both Watford as well as Udinese. Wilmot is as a defender, yet he states that he’s also comfortable in midfield. Wilmot was included in the England U21 squad on 30 August 2019. He was called up once again in October 2019 and eventually made his U21 debut in a 2–2 draw against Slovenia U21s in Maribor on 11 October 2019, coming on as a second- half substitute in the match.
Wilmot started his career at Stevenage as a player in the club’s academy , before making it into the first team in his 2017-18 campaign. Wilmot later signed for Watford in May of this year. Wilmot was loaned by Serie A club Udinese in January 2019before signing with Swansea City of the Championship on loan in July of 2019. He made his debut for the first team on October 3, 2017, and was in the full game in the middle of defence when Stevenage was unable to draw 0-0 away from Milton Keynes Dons in the EFL Trophy. Wilmot established himself as an integral part of the first team through January 2018, assisting Stevenage keep three clean sheets over six games. Stevenage Chairman Phil Wallace stated the club was unable to reject three offers by Premier League clubs for Wilmot in the 2018 January transfer window. One of them was the offer of PS500,000 from Watford while Tottenham Hotspur offered “slightly less”. Wilmot did not feature in any Stevenage match since the beginning of April until the end of the season, with the possibility of a transfer “close” to being agreed. Wilmot played 15 times during the season.
Wilmot was recruited to Stevenage in the academy as a scholar. He moved up through the ranks of youth at his local club. As a first-year student Wilmot was signed to his debut professional deal with Stevenage in April 2017after after impressing throughout Stevenage’s FA Youth Cup run during the 2016-17 season.
Wilmot was called up to represent England U19s in March 2018 for their three 2018 UEFA European U19 Championship qualification matches in Skopje. Wilmot was the only player outside of the top two divisions to be named in the squad. He made his England U19 debut in a 3–0 win over Latvia U19s on 24 March 2018, coming on as an 84th-minute substitute in the match. In doing so, he became the first Stevenage player to represent England at youth level.
