Between 1988 and 1995, Hess completed 12 races in NASCAR’s premier series, which was then named The Winston Cup Series; his first race was held at North Carolina Motor Speedway in October 1988. He was 20th in a family owned vehicle; he was able to race for his family’s team in 10 of the 12 Cup Series races he qualified for. He also competed for the owners Henley Gray, Jim Spicuzza, Tom Winkle, and Sadler Brothers Racing, qualifying in one event for Winkle in the year 1990. When racing for the Sadler Brothers, Hess was one of 86 drivers that tried to be eligible for in 1994’s Brickyard 400; after failing to finish in the top 20 in the first round of qualifying, he suffered an injury during a crash practice while prepping for the second time trial which forced him to pull out from the race. Hess made his final appearance at the Winston Cup Series at the 1995 Daytona 500, racing for RaDiUs Motorsports; Hess finished 28th in the race, just four laps behind.
