Basuki was born in Surakarta on the 5th of November, 1954. He was his fourth child of an officer from the Indonesian Army with seven siblings. When he was a kid Basuki was often moved because of the stationing of his father. He attended elementary school in Palembang middle school in Papua and secondary school at Surabaya.
After having graduated at UGM, Basuki landed a position at the public ministry where he is an employee of the civil service. After a number of years, he was awarded an award from the ministry to continue his studies. He then earned both a master’s degree and doctorate degree at Colorado State University at ages 35 and 38 respectively. After completing his studies after which he returned back to Indonesia and continued to work in the ministry, and was awarded an award for the ministry’s most productive employee 1995. Then the ministry promoted him to head Ministry’s Research and Development department between 2005 and 2007. Following this, he was the inspector general of the ministry from 2007 until 2013. His last post prior to his appointment as minister at the end of October was director general for spatial development.
During his time at the ministry, he had participated in several national-level working groups including ones related to rehabilitation following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in Aceh, handling of the Sidoarjo mud flow (2006–2007), reparation of the Purbaleunyi Toll Road and management of food scarcity in Yahukimo Regency (both in 2006).
In May 2012, Basuki was also appointed as the chief commissioner at Wijaya Karya, a state-owned construction company. He also served as a vice president of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage for the 2013-2016 tenure.
Basuki is a native of Surakarta and his father was a soldier in his country’s Indonesian Army. After earning his bachelor’s degree at Gadjah Mada University in 1979 He was then appointed to the public works ministry and began his work there. In the following years, he received his doctorate and master’s degrees in the field of public administration from Colorado State University. He rose up the ranks and was director-general and inspector general at the time up to the point that he took an invitation from Joko Widodo to be minister following more than 30 years of service as an official in 2014.

Mochamad Basuki Hadimuljono (born 5 November 1954) is an Indonesian bureaucrat currently serving as Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing under Joko Widodo. Prior to his appointment as the minister was his time at the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works for nine years.
During his high school time during his high school years, he participated in school band and played the drum. After graduating from his high school education at SMA Negeri 5 Surabaya (id) and was accepted to Gadjah Mada University where he was studying engineering geology. He graduated from the university in 1979, age 25.
For his 30 years of service in the Ministry of Public Works, Basuki was awarded the three Satyalencana Karya medals. He was also awarded the Satyalencana Pembangunan and Satyalencana Wirakarya medal in 2003 and 2005 respectively, in addition to Satyalencana Kesejahteraan Sosial for his work in Aceh following the tsunami. In December 2017, he also received the Bintang Bhayangkara Utama alongside 6 other cabinet ministers.

In the 2016 ministry budget, construction of roads and bridges received the largest share followed by water resources. The Indonesian government set plans to construct 1,000 km of toll roads within Widodo’s first 5-year tenure alongside 2,650 km of national roads. This included completion of the Trans- Java Toll Road and the initiation of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road, in addition to the Trans Papua road–which according to Basuki was planned to reach 4,300 km in length by 2019.
