Bassey Ikpi is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on August 3, 1976 in Ikom, Nigeria. Ikpi was born in Ikom, Cross River State, Nigeria, on August 3, 1976 to an Nigerian family born in Ugep. At the age of four, young, she emigrated along with her parents, to Stillwater, Oklahoma, United States where she stayed until she turned 13 years old. After that, she relocated in Greenbelt, Maryland, a suburb of Washington DC.
She spoke about it openly as an opinion article published on Huffington Post in January 2011. She has also made public appearances about it in a variety of public forums in an effort to help others get over the stigma and comprehend the difficulties. She also wrote numerous articles for freelance “for several media outlets on the topic of mental health and pop culture commentary including Ebony, The Huffington Post, Essence.com, XOJane.com and TheRoot.com.”
She returned to Nigeria first when she was 12, and later when she was 18. In 2012, at age 36, she returned to Lagos, Nigeria to work in spoken word, writing, and television.
On July 2, 2013, the first “No Shame Day” was held on social media, where people struggling with depression or mental illnesses are encouraged to post their stories without shame to the world. “An opportunity for people around the world to rally around mental health care… [with] candid discussions about mental illness stigma, diagnoses, and treatment options. The purpose of No Shame Day is to encourage more people to seek treatment without shame.
Ikpi created “The Siwe Project”, named in honor of Siwe Monsanto who was a fifteen-year-old child of her best friend, who took suicide in 2011 following depressive episodes in order to inspire those suffering from mental illness to “be inspired to seek help and to manage their illnesses and to not be afraid or ashamed to talk about it.” Siwe Project Siwe Project is registered as “a global non-profit dedicated to promoting mental health awareness throughout the international black community.”

At around the age of 21 Ikpi relocated in New York City for more opportunities. There she came across “the Louder Arts Movement” and The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and later , the Def Poetry Jam. It was also at this place that she was taught to approach her writing with seriousness. She went on to become a well-known spoken-word performer in the city. She was included on the Def Poetry Jam TV show for five seasons. She also toured with the company for one year beginning in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as after that, for a second year, doing an National Tour with their original Broadway cast. She toured as part of Def Poetry Jam from 2001 until 2004.
In January 2004 in Chicago on one of her trips across the United States for the Def Poetry Jam, she was suffering from depression and anxiety, as well as insomnia caused by stress. The next day at New York City, she was diagnosed with Bipolar II Disorder and claimed it was always present since the time she was a child.
While in Lagos, she organised what she called the “Basseyworld Presents Naija Poetry Slam”, a National Poetry Slam competition, the first in the country, in September, 2012. The show was described as “an avenue to give a taste of Bassey’s innovative approach to the art of spoken word in an evening of poetry and thought-provoking discussion.”
