McRae is a co-owner of the London Knights with Dale Hunter and Mark Hunter. On the 21st of October 14th, 2014 McRae was named the Knights announced that McRae was to be named vice-general manager as well as alternate governor. At the time of the NHL Entry Draft, the Quebec Nordiques drafted McRae in the third round, which placed him 87th overall. McRae played in twenty regular season games as well as nine playoff games for the team’s biggest club in
- He then spent some time with Fredericton Express of the American Hockey League (AHL). He was transferred for the Toronto Maple Leafs for Richard Turmel. He then was able to spend a few years in the minors for the St. Catharines Saints of the AHL. In 1985, McRae became an unrestricted free agent to the Detroit Red Wings but was transferred back to his previous team the Nordiques together alongside John Ogrodnick and Doug Shedden to Brent Ashton, Gilbert Delorme and Mark Kumpel.
When 1988, McRae signed with the Minnesota North Stars, the team that he would experience the greatest success with. The 1987-88 season was the first time that McRae take on the entire eighteen games for the North Stars, the first time he had played a complete year in the NHL. McRae formed a formidable pair of enforcers along and Shane Churla, leading the league in penalty minutes , with 351 in the year 1990. In 1990, the Tampa Bay Lightning claimed him in the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft and traded McRae for the St. Louis Blues in 1993. After a few seasons within the Blues team, McRae signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1996 and only played in eight games before resigning as a professional player.
