Albin Dyer was born Barry George Dyer in London. He was the son of an undertaker. He purchased the company Albin and Sons in 1986 after which he changed his surname to Albin-Dyer. He refused lucrative offers from funeral houses that were looking to acquire F.A.Albin and Sons, preferring to remain an independent. He was a prominent figure in the Bermondsey region of London in which the company was based, as well as due to his military duties in the areas of Royal Wootton Bassett and Brize Norton.
In the mid-2003 timeframe, F.A. Albin and Sons as well as its employees, along with Albin-Dyer were the subject of an ITV TV series called Don’t Drop the Coffin, that followed the day-to-day life of the staff from the end of 2002 until the beginning of 2003. It was also among the most talked about programs in the entire year. The title was inspired by the very first piece of advice his father gave the young man when he first started his career as an undertaker. The show was inspired by the book with the same title that Albin- Dyer had previously published, and ITV later packaging the book with more details about the creation of the show.
He died from brain cancer on 6 June 2015, aged 64. He was a Roman Catholic convert. In tribute, Digital television channel London Live repeated Don’t Drop the Coffin in full, having already repeated the series in January of that year.
