After having graduated from Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut in 1978, Potter chose to become a professional and not accept an offer for admission to Princeton. Left-handed, she made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Open in 1981 and the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 1984, and Wimbledon in 1982, 1983 , and 1985. In the WTA Tour Championships, she made it to the semifinals of singles in 1984. She was second in doubles play with Sharon Walsh in 1981.
