Her birthplace is Windsor, Ontario, she has been a long-time companion with poet Christopher Dewdney and resides in Toronto.
In June 2008 Gowdy’s 2007 novel Helpless which tells the story of the kidnapping and stalking of a nine-year-old girl was edited and adapted to BBC Radio 4’s Book at Bedtime. It resulted in a number of listeners claiming the book was ‘dark’ and ‘disturbing’, and ‘(frightened) the living daylights from them’. The editor who commissioned the novel Caroline Raphael defended the BBC’s choice by saying “It is about a very difficult subject … Unfortunately, writers do want to write about disturbing things” she also said that angry listeners could “turn off”.
She was made a member of the Order of Canada effective 5 October 2006. She received an John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship for her efforts.

The novel by Gowdy Falling Angels (1989) was transformed into a film with the same title directed by Scott Smith, from an adaptation by Esta Spalding, which was released in 2002. The darkly comical novel centers on a family of nuclear members in the 1960s in an Ontario suburb. The protagonists comprise three siblings who grow up to age in a family that is run by their abusive and female-oriented father. They have to constantly come up with ways to help their depressed and drunk mother. Gowdy states that the source of inspiration for the novel was the concept of an Canadian family who lived during the Cold War and practicing using their bomb shelters in the backyard. In the film and novel the family is forced to spend two weeks in the bomb shelter for an “exercise” rather than going to a trip with the family to Disneyland.
The main character, narrator and narrator of the title story in her 1992 collection called We So Rarely See Love for example, is an embalmer assistant at funeral homes who gives the corpses of beautiful young men before they are laid to rest. The story served as the source of inspiration to The 1997 Canadian indie film Kissed written and directed by Lynne Stopkewich, and with Molly Parker. The title of the story is taken from the line of Frank O’Hara poem “Ode on Necrophilia”, and was influenced by a news story that Gowdy wrote about Karen Greenlee, a young California woman who escaped the hearse as it was going to a funeral. She then and took the body of the man who was inside it to the hotel room, and had sexual relations with it for a few days before being arrested in the hands of police. The whole collection of stories deals with the outsiders who struggle to find their identity in the world and trying everything they can accomplish this goal. “The Two-Headed Man,” for example, depicts an individual who takes off his conjoined head , and as a result, commits suicide or murder. Another novel, “93 Million Miles Away” features the story of a woman who, in desperately need of being noticed and recognized, spills her blood by exposing herself through the window of her house to a doctor in the apartment across the street. The story was adapted into the movie Arousal.
