Hakeem began his coaching career by coaching Al-Wahda taking home his first Syrian Cup in 1993. In the 1990s, he was in charge of young teams like Syria U20, and Syria U23. In the following years, he was manager of Al-Wahda for a number of times and was an assistant to Valeriu Tita during the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. He also spent time in Iraq with Duhok and was also with Duhok, and in Jordan along with Al-Faisaly, Ittihad Al-Ramtha and Al-Ramtha.
On the 9th of May in 2016, Hakeem was appointed as the head coach of the Syria national team. He guided his team towards their highest performance when they played in the 2017 FIFA World Cup qualification – AFC Fourth Round against Australia but lost in the extra time.
