He was the holder of the WBO interim middleweight title from 2002 to 2017 and also won the IBO middleweight tile in the year 2011. He also competed to win the interim WBA middleweight title in 2010.
In February of 2017 the mandatory challenger Khurtsidze signed a’step-aside’ fee in order to permit Billy Joe Saunders to pursue an even bigger fight. On the 28th of February it was announced that Khurtsidze will fight British boxer Tommy Langford for the vacant interim WBO title in April.

Saunders claimed to have signed the contract and gave Golovkin a deadline to sign his. On 29 March, Frank Warren also stated that Golovkin would have ten days to sign for the fight. Saunders later claimed to have moved on from Golovkin, until Warren said the deal was still in place. Over the next week, Saunders continued to insult Golovkin through social media. On 7 April, Warren told iFL TV that Golovkin had a hand injury, which was the reason the fight had not been made. In the interview, he said, “At the moment, they’re saying that Golovkin’s injured. So we’re waiting to see where this is all going. But as far as I’m concerned, we agreed [to] terms.” It was also noted that he would wait until 6 May, for any updates. On 11 April, it was reported that the fight would not take place; Golovkin ultimately fought Canelo Alvarez, in September 2017.
After keeping his belts against Jacobs, Gennady Golovkin stated that he would like to unify the middleweight division , and to keep all the belts in his possession. Golovkin declared, “My goal is all the belts in the middleweight division. Of course, Billy Joe is the last one. It is my dream.” There was speculation it was scheduled to be held in Golovkin’s homeland, Kazakhstan, in June during EXPO 2017. On the 20th of March, Golovkin said that he would take on Saunders at the O2 Arena in Kazakhstan or at the O2 Arena, in London.

On June 8th the 8th of June, 2017 Prosecutors in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York charged Khurtsidze with infringing on the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) Act and conspiring to engage in wire fraud with an Russian organized crime syndicate that was operating within the New York City area. As per the charges Khurtsidze is accused of having paid $17,800 to purchase three cases of cigarettes that were allegedly stolen.
On April 22, 2017 Khurtsidze defeated Langford out in the fifth round by a left hook in order to set up an upcoming fight with Saunders. The following day, fighting of Saunders as well as Khurtsidze was announced to take on the Copper Box in London on 8 July 2017. On the 8th of June, Khurtsidze was arrested in New York along with 32 others, tying him to the Russian as well as a Georgian criminal syndicate. The charges of racketeering and conspiracy commit fraud were the two most likely charges. Promoter Lou DiBella said that, even though the fight will not be canceled completely but it could be delayed. Because the fight is mandatory Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren, said that it was impossible to put forward an appeal on his own and be removed from the card.
