Vilan was elected to his seat in the 2003 elections , and also chaired the same committee as well as his own Lobby for Public Persons as Role Models. Vilan was able to keep his seat during the elections of 2006.
In the elections of 1999, Vilan became a member of the Knesset on the Meretz list. In his first term at the Knesset Vilan was the chair of the Knesset Inquiry Committee on Violence in Sports.

Vilan was involved in politics during the 1970s. He was a member of the Peace Now party in 1978. became the first participant of Peace Now. He joined the socialist party Mapam and was elected the party’s secretary in the year 1990. When Mapam joined forces along with Ratz along with Shinui to create Meretz In 1992 Vilan joined the newly formed party.
Vilan has studied Economics as well as Philosophy at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was an agriculturalist and economist before becoming an emissary of HaShomer Hatzair and Kibbutz Artzi in 1993. When he returned in Israel in 1996, he took on the role of the secretary for Kibbutz Artzi, a role which he held until 1999.
Prior to the 2009 elections he won fifth place on the Meretz list. However, he lost his seat when the party was reduced to three mandates.
