Avinash Kumar Agarwal born 22 August 1972 in Karauli located in the Indian state of Rajasthan He earned his master’s diploma in mechanical engineering (BTech) from Malaviya Regional Engineering College (MREC) Jaipur (present-day Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur) of the University of Rajasthan in 1994 and completed his master’s degree from the Centre for Energy Studies of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi where he received the MTech degree in Energy Studies in the year 1996. Following this the doctoral program began in the department of IIT Delhi, in Center for Energy Studies, under the direction under the direction of L. M. Das who he was able to successfully defend in 1999 in his thesis performance evaluation and tribological research on a biodiesel fuelled combustion ignition motor. Then he travelled to the US to pursue his postdoctoral studies which he did with the Engine Research Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1999 to 2001. After returning to India in the month of March 2001, he was enrolled at in the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur as an assistant professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007, and is working at this institute from 2012, as a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He was able to spend seven brief periods in the United States as a visiting professor over the time, beginning at Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering of the University of Loughborough in 2002. Then, Third and second in 2003, at the Photonics Institute of Technical University of Vienna in the years 2004 and 2013 and the fourth and fifth in Hanyang University, South Korea in 2013 and 2015, and the final time at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in the year 2016.
Agarwal has been married for a while to Dr. Rashmi A. Agarwal and they have two children: Aditya (b. 2003) and Rithwik (b. 2006). The family is located within Kanpur located in Uttar Pradesh.
Agrawal’s researches has covered the fields of engine combustion, alternate fuels, emission and particulate control, optical diagnosis, Methanol Engine Development, fuel spray optimization and tribology and his work has assisted in the development of low-cost diesel oxidation catalysts and homogeneous charge compression ignition engines. His studies of laser ignition of methane- air hydrogen-air mixtures and biodiesel based on Indian feedstocks have widened the understanding of the subjects; he carried out a project on biodiesels during 2010–13 for the Department of Science and Technology of India. He has documented his researches by way of over 280 articles; Google Scholar and ResearchGate, online repositories of scientific articles, have listed many of them. Besides, he has edited forty books, most of which are published by Springer, including, Combustion for Power Generation and Transportation, and Novel Combustion Concepts for Sustainable Energy Development and has contributed forty two chapters to many books. He is also a co-editor of a five-volume reference text, Handbook of Combustion, published by Wiley-VCH in 2010.
Agarwal was awarded Agarwal was awarded the Young Scientist Award of the Department of Science and Technology in 2002. He was then awarded his Career Award for Young Teachers of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) in 2004. Agarwal was awarded the Young Engineer Award of the Indian National Academy of Engineering was awarded to him in 2005, along with his Young Scientists Medal of the Indian National Science Academy came to him in 2007. He was awarded the Alkyl Amine Young Scientist Award from the Institute of Chemical Technology the same year . A following year, SAE International selected him for the 2008 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award. He was awarded the C. V. Raman Young Teachers Award from the IES Group in 2011 and the NASI- Reliance Industry Platinum Jubilee Award of the National Academy of Sciences, India in 2012. It was the Indian National Academy of Engineering awarded him again in 2012 by awarding him an award called the Silver Jubilee Young Engineer Award and was immediately followed with the “Rajib Goyal Prize” in Physical Sciences-2015 at Kurukshetra University and then Council of Scientific and Industrial Research conferred the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, one of the most prestigious Indian science prizes in 2016. In the following year, he was awarded “Er. M P Baya National Award-2017” in Mechanical Engineering by the Institution of Engineers, Udaipur and Clarivate Analytics India Research Excellence Citation Award, 2017. It was the 6th edition prize for significant citations and high-impact research conducted in India which was awarded to him by Clarivate Analytics.

Agarwal who was the recipient of the BOYSCAST Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology in 2002, and the Devendra Shukla Research Fellowship at IIT Kanpur in 2009, was made a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering in the year 2015.
