Mody was a student of Electronics in the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. After his B.Tech. (1978) He changed fields and earned an M.Phil. in applied Economics in the Centre for Development Studies in Trivandrum 1979. There he was Research Associate until completing the PhD in Economics at Boston University in 1986.
He was briefly employed by AT&T Bell Laboratories as a tech staff member before being hired by the World Bank where he worked from 1987 until 2003. In 1997/98, Mody was a visiting professor of public policy at the Wharton School. In 2001, until the time of his retirement Mody served as the deputy director for the IMF’s European Department. Mody is against spending cuts as a method to address credit crisis.
