Ashley Emile Swearengin (nee Newton) (born on May 24 1972) is an American politician who was the city’s 24th Mayor in Fresno, California. The Fresno’s only female city manager. She was elected first in a run-off vote in November of 2008, and was elected again in 2012. Swearengin ran for State Controller in 2014. After her departure from the Mayor’s office she was elected CEO and president for Central Valley Community Foundation. Central Valley Community Foundation.
As of 2005, she was appointed the head of the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley the group founded in 2005 by Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the present, she is the vice chairman of the partnership’s board directors.
In March 2012, Ashley Swearengin announced that the City was facing a fiscal emergency because of the state’s continued economic troubles combined with high cost contracts for certain segments of the city’s labor force. A USA Today listed Fresno among 10 cities that could follow Stockton and Vallejo into Chapter 9 bankruptcy.
In 2012, she won re-election to a second term with 75% of the vote, defeating four other candidates.
She was in 2002 when she founded in 2002 the Regional Jobs Initiative (RJI) focused on industry and designed to assist the jobless of Fresno County. She was the chief operating officer.
