He was the candidate of the Labour Party in 2017 during the by-elections in constituency no 18, Belle Rose and Quatre-Bornes. He was elected and became member of the national assembly anew. He was candidate of the Labour Party in the 2019 General Elections and was elected in Constituency no. 18 again. Since the labour leader Navin Ramgoolam was not elected as member of parliament, the party chose him to be its parliamentary leader and being the official opposition party, Boolell became the leader of the Opposition.
