In his early twenties, the journalist has been an active participant in the field of human rights on an international level. He also worked with various non-governmental organisations and The Transnational Radical Party. In 1986 He took part in the cases that involved Severina as well as Michaela Filipov, the young children of two Bulgarian refugees from Italy who were re-assigned in their country of origin by local authorities. In the year following as the President of the Federal Secretariat for the Italian Radical Party, he presided over the gathering “Human rights and dissense in the Gorbaciov era”, in which soviet dissidents Vladimir Bukovsky, Leonid Plyushch, Vladimir Maximov and Anatoly Levitin-Krasnov signed their Rome Manifesto of the soviet dissidents, which demanded the recognition of human rights in the Soviet Union. He established together with Paolo Ungari the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights as well as was a vocal opponent of the repressions in Romania that were imposed by regime of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. The following years the activist continued his work in support of human rights, particularly in the the former Soviet area, through the establishment of connections with opponents who were part of the Communist regime such, such as Vaclav Havel. He was also detained in the hands of East Germany police during a demonstration in protest against and against Berlin Wall; and by the police of the Soviet Union during an event in Moscow.

In 2002 and 2003, the member was part in the work group on education on human rights within the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network. As of 2003, he worked as an expert on the project of the International Helsinki Federation for human rights, funded from the European Commission, The juridical protection of human rights in the Russian Federation which carried out mission in Sakhalin and the Russian far eastern region. He gave lectures on the rights of people throughout Italy, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Lebanon working with various institutions, universities, as well as other institutional bodies and was an advisor to the European Parliament, so as for the Italian Parliament as well as the Italian Parliament and Senate. He co-founded and directed publications Confronto con l’Est (1982-1988), La Nuova Frontiera – International Human Rights and Security Review (1995-2003) and La Scrittura (1996-2002).

In September 2015 he was appointed by the French non-governmental organization Ensemble Contre la Peine de Mort as the coordinator of the Worldwide Congress against the Death Penalty (Oslo, 21–23 June 2016).
