Antonio Benarrivo (Italian pronunciation: [an’to:njo benar’ri’vo] ; born on the 21st of August, 1968) is an Italian former professional footballer who was a defensive player. One of the top players of the world at his position in the 90s Benarrivo was an active attacking full-back that could operate on both wings. He started his career at Brindisi in 1986 and later transferred towards Padova at the age of 1989. He became famous in his time at Parma and joined Parma in 1991. He won numerous domestic and European championships as part of the team, and later was the team’s best record holder during Serie A and in European tournaments.
Benarrivo played for the national team for a number of times and for a short time when he was the first right-back of the Italians. The first time he played was on the 22nd of September 1993, under manager Arrigo Sacchi during the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Estonia. He played in the 1994 World Cup with Italy, which reached the final only losing to Brazil with penalties. Benarrivo was a crucial part of the squad that played in during the 1994 World Cup, also featuring in the final game and showing his versatility on the pitch when he switched between the right and left flank. Benarrivo was a part of the national team from 1997. He made his last appearance on 29 October against Russia.
At international level, Benarrivo represented Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the final.
Benarrivo experienced another successful year with the club during the 1998–99 season. Parma finished fourth place in the league, but Benarrivo finished the season with the conquest of his second UEFA Cup and Italian Cup titles, following these successes up with the 1999 Supercoppa Italiana, a title which had evaded him in 1995. This would be his final season as an indisputable starter, however, and the following seasons would see him play with less regularity.
In the year 1991, Benarrivo was bought by Parma under Nevio Scala. That year, he helped his new team in qualifying for UEFA Cup in his first year in Serie A. He soon established himself as one of best players in the Emilian team, which had significant domestic as well as European success over the following decade. The first time he played in the top division, Bennarivo was the winner of in 1992 the Italian Cup, and the following year, in the 1992-93 period, he was awarded his first Cup Winners Cup. He was able to reach a second Cup Winners’ Cup Final in the 1993-94 campaign, but was defeated, however, the club was able to win the European Supercup with the club in 1993.
