Portantino (born on January 29 1961) is an American politician as a senator in the California State Senate. A Democrat He represents his 25th Senate District that covers portions that are located in San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys.

Following his time with the California State Assembly, Portantino initially announced that he would be running in Congress for the seat of David Dreier, even though the district was still drawn. Portantino later considered running for Senate Carol Liu in State Senate District 25, but decided against the idea due to personal reasons. Since 2013, the Portantino began running to take over the seat of Senator Liu who is scheduled to be removed from District 25 through term limits in the year 2016.

The Screen Actors Guild in 2010 Portantino proposed an antigatecrashing law which would make party-crashing unintentional and punishable with up to six months prison, or a $1,000 fine or both. He claimed that parties that crash was a danger to the safety of the public. He proposed legislation to eliminate tattoos of victims of prostitution that is forced.

Portantino was a member of his term on the La Canada Flintridge City Council between 1999 and 2006. The council was supervised by Carol Liu, who endorsed his candidacy to succeed her at the California State Assembly.

Prior to his appointment into the State Senate, Portantino served in the California State Assembly from 2006 until 2012, serving in the44th Assembly District. Portantino was elected into his seat in the State Senate in 2016 after beating Republican Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich.

In May 2019, Portantino, as Senate Appropriations Committee Chair, used a pocket veto to temporarily block Senate Bill 50, a bill that would enact reforms to address the California housing shortage by reducing local control (such as allowing more apartment construction near public transit and in suburbs), from leaving committee to enter the Senate for debate and voting. Proponents of the bill accused Portantino of abusing his powers to deny Senate Bill 50 a debate and a vote in the Senate. The Los Angeles Times wrote that Portantino’s opposition to the bill was expected, but that it was a surprise that he would not allow the bill to advance out of committee. Due to Portantino’s action, the bill was not considered by the Senate until 2020; it was subsequently defeated in a floor vote.
