He played in the NCAA football tournament in the state of Alabama at Alabama A&M, and was signed by the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent in 2016.
On August 31st on the 31st of August, Lanier was waived by the Chargers and was signed on to the practice squad the following day. The contract he signed with the practice squad of the team was due to expire on January 6, 2020.
Lanier was not active during the initial six games of 2017. In Week 11, against The New Orleans Saints, he made his first career sack of Drew Brees. In the 2015 NFL Draft, Lanier signed with the Washington Redskins on May 6 on the 6th of May, 2016. In training camp and in the preseason The team announced that his inclusion on their 53-man roster in September 3rd in 2016. Lanier made Lanier’s NFL debut, in week 8 Lanier was able to recover a fumble that was forced by Chris Baker on Bengals’ quarterback Andy Dalton. He was put in the injured reserve list on December 13 in 2016.
