Anthony Chiappone is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on November 13, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. The charges brought against Chiappone in the criminal court meant that both Assemblymen from the 31st legislative district were indicted simultaneously as L. Harvey Smith had been indicted on fraud and laundering of funds charges just one month prior to the time Chiappone was indicted.

He also held a seat on his position in the New Jersey General Assembly and on the City Council. This dual position, also called double dipping, is granted by a grandfather clause in the state law passed in members of the New Jersey Legislature and signed into law by Governor of New Jersey Jon Corzine in September 2007. This law prevents dual office-holding but permits those who held both positions prior to January 1, 2008 to keep both positions.

Chiappone accepted a plea agreement on June 25, 2010, and subsequently submitted a letter of resignation to Joseph Cryan, Assembly Democratic Leader. Jason O’Donnell, a Democrat in the district, was chosen in July to replace Chiappone and was sworn into the Assembly in September 2010.

Chiappone served in the Assembly on the Health and Senior Services Committee, the Human Services Committee and the Regulated Professions Committee. His legislative office was located at 663 Broadway in Bayonne. He had challenged incumbent Mark Smith in February 2010 to become Mayor of Bayonne, New Jersey.

Chiappone was also a Councilman-at-Large of the City of Bayonne winning the third term of four years in May 2006 , and serving until April 2009, when Chiappone decided to resign. Chiappone has been a member of the Bayonne City Council since 1998, serving as a Councilman-at-Large since 2002, and was a Bayonne representative in the First Ward from 1998-2002. As an City Council Member, Chiappone was on the Board of School Estimate Committee as well as The Bayonne Economic Development Committee, the Cable TV Committee, member of the CDBG Committee, was a member of the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation, and was a Commissioner for the Base Local Redevelopment Agency that manages the development of Bayonne’s Peninsula.

Anthony Chiappone (born November 13 1957 Brooklyn, New York) is an American Democratic Party politician who was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, in which he was a member of in the 31st Legislative District from 2004 until 2006, and then again in 2008, until his resignation in the year 2010.

Chiappone’s career began in politics in 1994 when he created the local public- access television show known as “Bayonne Sunnyside Up,” that focused on the community-based events that occur in Bayonne. Chiappone later developed the community-based initiative, “Bayonne Public Forum.” Through this government- access television (GATV) platform the host broadcast meeting of the Bayonne Municipal Council, Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders as well as the local schools board meeting, and Bayonne Zoning & Planning Board meetings. Through his civic involvement that Chiappone began to be involved in politics and local government. Chiappone, at the time, founded the watchdog organization for civic activists named REACT (REsponsible ACTion in the Government). Chiappone was an independent Municipal candidate, Chiappone was elected in 2002, having beat his fellow Council Candidates of the political adversaries Bayonne Mayor as well as Assemblyman from the District 31 Joseph V. Doria, Chiappone was picked by Jersey City Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham to be a member of his team for the district of 31st. Together along with Lou Manzo, Chiappone and Glenn Cunningham defeated Joe Doria’s 31st District Democratic team comprised of Joseph V. Doria, L. Harvey Smith and Elba Perez-Cinciarelli during the June 2003 Primary election. After the passing of Glenn Cunningham, Chiappone ran unsuccessfully for Senate against Joseph V. Doria in the Special election to fill the vacancy that was created in November 2004. Chiappone was defeated by the Democratic Primary in June 2005 by the team of Louis Manzo and Jersey City Superintendent Charles T. Epps, Jr. After losing to “Team Doria” for the non-partisan election in 2006 Bayonne municipal election to the post of Councilman At-Large Chiappone allied himself along with his wife the late Glenn Cunningham, Sandra Bolden Cunningham in order to run for state legislative office within the district of 31st District. Alongside his running mate L. Harvey Smith, Chiappone beat Team Doria, which included Nicholas Chiaravrolloti and Sheila Moses-Newton in the race for Assembly at the Democratic primary in 2007 which was essentially a win because they were unopposed for the General Election. Chiappone, along with Smith were elected for the position of Assemblyman in January of 2008.

On August 26, 2009, Chiappone and his wife, Diane, were indicted on seven counts, including theft by deception, official misconduct, tampering with public records, falsifying records, conspiracy, and misrepresentation of contributions or expenditures, having allegedly issued over $8,000 in state- issued paychecks to campaign volunteers in 2005, then diverting the money into his personal accounts and his campaign fund, without declaring it on his campaign finance forms. In spite of the charges against him and calls for his resignation from Governor Jon Corzine and Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts, Chiappone proclaimed his innocence and refused both to resign and to withdraw from his re-election campaign.
