The year 1973 was the time that Michel was graduated from her first class at University of Wurzburg. Her fellow students later identified her as “withdrawn and very religious”.
A priest named Ernst Alt, whom they saw, upon seeing her stated the following “she didn’t look like an epileptic” and that he could not discern her suffering from seizures. Alt believed that she suffered from demonic possession, and requested that the local bishop permit an exorcism. In a letter written to Alt on the 25th of May, 1975 Michel stated, “I am nothing; everything about me is vanity. What should I do? I have to improve. You pray for me” and was also quoted as saying “I want to suffer for other people…but this is so cruel”. In September of that same year the Bishop Josef Stangl granted the priest Arnold Renz permission to exorcise in accordance with the Rituale Romanum of 1614, however, he ordered absolute secret. Renz conducted his first exorcism on September. Michel began talking more frequently concerning “dying to atone for the wayward youth of the day and the apostate priests of the modern church”, and she decided to not take food towards the end. At the point of her death her parents stopped contacting doctors at her request and relied on exorcism rituals. The exorcisms were performed in 67 sessions. One or two per week, lasting as long as 4 hours, were carried out over a period of ten months, from 1975 and into 1976.
In 1976, the state charged Michel’s parents and priests Ernst Alt and Arnold Renz with negligent homicide. During the case Michel’s body was exhumed and tapes were played to the court of the exorcisms over the eleven months which led to her death. The parents were defended by Erich Schmidt-Leichner; their lawyers were sponsored by the Church. The state recommended that no involved parties be jailed; instead, the recommended sentence for the priests was a fine, while the prosecution concluded that the parents should be exempt from punishment as they had “suffered enough”, which is a criterion in German penal law, cf. § 60 StGB.
On 1 July 1976, Michel died in her home. The autopsy report stated the cause was malnutrition and dehydration due to being in a semi-starvation state for almost a year while the rites of exorcism were performed. She weighed 30 kilograms (68 pounds), suffering broken knees due to continuous genuflections. She was unable to move without assistance, and was reported to have contracted pneumonia.
Michel along with her loved ones along with her family and community became convinced, and sought out several priests seeking an exorcism. The priests refused, suggested continuing medical treatment and advised the family that exorcisms require approval from the bishop. The Catholic Church the official acceptance of an exorcism is granted when the person fulfills the prescribed standards, after which they are believed to being suffering in the possession (infestatio) and are under the control of demonic forces. A strong dislike of sacred objects and supernatural powers are among the first indicators. Michel was physically ill and showed aggression, self-injury and self-injury. She also drank her own urine and consumed insects. Then, in November of 1973 Michel was treated with Tegretol which is an anti-seizure medication as well as a mood stabilizer. Her doctor prescribed antipsychotics as part of her rituals of the church and used regularly until prior to her death. Even though she was taking neuroleptic drugs Michel’s symptoms grew worse as she started to exhibit “growling, seeing demons, throwing things.”

In June of 1970, Michel suffered a third seizure in the psychiatric institution in which she was staying. She was prescribed anti-convulsion medication at first, which included Dilantin however, it didn’t help the issue. She began to report having “devil faces” at various time during the day. In the same month she was also prescribed a different medication called Aolept, which is akin to chlorpromazine. It’s utilized in the treatment of various psychoses , including schizophrenia as well as delusions, disturbed behavior and schizophrenia. In 1973, she was suffering from depression. She started hallucinating during prayer, and was concerned about being told by voices the truth that she’s “damned” and would “rot in hell”. Michel’s treatment at a psychiatric hospital didn’t improve her health , and her depression grew worse. The long-term treatment didn’t help neither did it help, so she became dissatisfied with the treatment that she was receiving pharmacological treatment for the past five years. Michel was unable to tolerate Christian sacred objects and places like the cross.
When Michel was sixteen, she experienced a seizure and was diagnosed with psychosis caused by temporal lobe epilepsy. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with depression and was treated by a psychiatric hospital. By the time she was twenty, she had become intolerant of various religious objects and began to hear voices. Her condition worsened despite medication, and she became suicidal, also displaying other symptoms, for which she took medication as well. After taking psychiatric medications for five years failed to improve her symptoms, Michel and her family became convinced she was possessed by a demon. As a result, her family appealed to the Catholic Church for an exorcism. While rejected at first, after much hesitation, two priests got permission from the local bishop in 1975. Anneliese Michel stopped eating food and died due to malnourishment and dehydration. Michel’s parents and the two Roman Catholic priests were found guilty of negligent homicide and were sentenced to six months in jail (reduced to three years of probation), as well as a fine.
