Taintor. His father worked as a lawyer, and her mother was a law student who became a housewife. She is the fifth of five kids and is a resident of Portland, Maine, having returned to her state of origin after eleven months there in New Mexico.

When she was at a garage sales located in South Portland, Maine, Taintor stumbled across an older Ladies Home Journal, which led her to start creating the style that would later become her signature piece. The first work like this, Intellectuals Gone Bad, was auctioned off during the Maine Festival which is a biennial event that combines crafts and performances at Portland, Maine, and included a picture of a woman as well as a man, accompanied by the words “intellectuals gone bad”. It was well-received within a short time she launched Anne Taintor, Inc.

In the early 1980s Anne moved around between various jobs, including waitress, seamstress and waitress as she worked her way through divorce. Then she started focusing on making and selling her collages to be able to provide for herself as well as her daughter. Her first items were handcrafted wooden earrings and lapel pins featuring collage art made by cutting and pasting images from 1950s and 1940s ads.

Anne Taintor (born August 16 1953) is an artist whose work deals with the stereotypes that women face, looked at from the perspective of advertisements from the mid-century often found in magazines like Ladies Home Journal and Life. Mixing these images together with humorous descriptions, she functions as a critique of the gender stereotypes that were popularized throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Her work has been recognized by some as an innovator in the combination of images from the mid century with contemporary slogans.

After finishing her studies at Lewiston High School in 1971 Taintor went on to attend Harvard University, from which she graduated in 1977 with an undergraduate degree in environmental and visual Studies. While a student, she enrolled in a collage class animation, which was to become her preferred method of animation. When she left Harvard and moving to Maine, she eventually relocated back to Maine and worked alongside other jobs as a cartographer, drawing map for the state’s atlases. She continued to collageand sold her collages at craft fairs in the area.

Celebrating her 25th anniversary in 2010, Taintor’s work is available on her personal website and in thousands of retail locations across 25 countries.
