Anne Preven is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on February 25, 1965 in New York, United States. Anne Preven (born February 25 1965) is an American musician, songwriter, and producer of records. As part of the band called Ednaswap Preven wrote “Torn” which was covered by Lis Sorensen (Danish), Trine Rein (Norwegian) and later Natalie Imbruglia (Australian) whose version was a world-wide number one airplay track and remained for an entire 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay Chart in the US. “Torn” has sold an estimated 4 million copies, and it has been recognized as platinum across three different countries and was named as the “number one radio single of the 1990s” by the radio DJ Rick Dees. As an music producer, Preven has collaborated with many of the industry’s most famous artists, like Madonna, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Sinead O’Connor, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Jordin Sparks, Zac Brown Band Pnau, Andy Grammar, Lea Michele, Pixie Lott, and Westlife.

The song was featured in their album Chicken as well as a one that was more dirge-like of the song was featured on Wacko Magneto. The song was made popular thanks to Natalie Imbruglia’s version from 1997 on the album she released on her debut, Left of the Middle. Imbruglia’s version was called “a defining song of its year, if not decade.” The song was the most played on radio for several weeks and the album was certified gold within the UK and double platinum in the US in large part due to the popularity of “Torn”. The song has been played numerous times on TV shows including Canadian Idol and X Factor. While Preven was delighted to hear her song played on Radio, she was dissatisfied that it was the version of Imbruglia rather than the Ednaswap version which became famous. In 1998, the Ednaswap fans requested KROQ which is the LA radio station to play the two opposite versions for comparison. those who voted for the rock station mostly favoring Ednaswap’s. But the pop version was favored more widely.

After Ednaswap, Preven, Cutler and Coogan formed the short lived “Annetenna”. The band signed with Columbia Records and produced an album. However, Columbia shelved the album after a company reorganization, and Annetenna subsequently disbanded. In 2001, the band eventually released all the songs for free through their website. Annetenna’s song, “74 Willow,” originally an Ednaswap song, was featured on HBO’s Six Feet Under.

In 2007, Preven and Cutler began their own music publishing company with record producer Josh Abraham, who founded Pulse Recording (recently renamed Pulse Music Group) in 2004. Pulse Music Group is the parent company of Pulse Music Publishing. Pulse describes itself as “by musicians and for musicians,” and strives to be a “sanctuary” for artists to explore their creative potential. In 2012, the company established a partnership with Creative Nation, the Nashville-based music management and publishing company owned by songwriter Luke Laird and his wife Beth Laird. After forming a partnership with Fuji Music Group in 2014, PULSE expanded its client roster to include Christian “Bloodshy” Karlsson, BØRNS, Gallant, Starrah, El-P of Run The Jewels, DRAM (rapper), RY X, and Kaytranada among others. The company’s other major ventures include music producer Rick Rubin’s first music publishing company, American Songs, and Marc Anthony’s Latin entertainment company Magnus Media. Pulse operates two recording studios, one based at its headquarters in Los Angeles, and four studios based in Burbank, California.

Preven’s debut big hit included “Sanctuary”, which Madonna performed in 1994 for Bedtime Stories. Madonna was first introduced to the track by someone close to Preven and Cutler who saw an early version of the song and decided “Madonna would love this song!” Madonna’s version was released prior to Ednaswap was even granted an album deal, and the song did not conform to Preven’s original idea. Preven initially believed that Madonna had destroyed the song and even went as that she went to meet with Madonna to request changes. After listening to the song as a part of the collection, Preven claims she “understood what [Madonna] was going for.” Preven and Cutler’s best-known and well-known cover was of the song “Torn”. The duo co-wrote the track in 1993, along with producer Phil Thornalley prior to when they formed the band. Preven says they wrote the song’s lyrics composed quickly. The first recording for the song was by Danish artist Lis Sorensen, in 1995, she was introduced the track by Thornalley. A second version of the song was released in 1996 with Trine Rein whom Thornalley also introduced her to. Ednaswap have released the first rendition of “Torn” on their self-titled album.

Preven graduated from Magna Preven graduated Magna Laude at Harvard College with a self-designed major: “psychobiology.” While in the college, Preven sang in and was the musical director of “the Opportunes,” Harvard’s co-ed group of acapella. After Harvard returned, she settled in New York City, where she started writing her own songs. In New York City, she came across Scott Cutler who was visiting from Los Angeles. In 1991, she relocated to New York City.

Cutler as well as Preven formed a group with Rusty Anderson, Paul Bushnell and Carla Azar in 1993. The name of the band, “Ednaswap,” came from the nightmare Preven was having about seeing herself in a group with the same name being kicked off the stage. Ednaswap was signed to an agreement with a record label in 1995, despite only having one song written, and having never performed in a live performance. They performed a small performance, which was acoustic, in the living room of Cutler. The show was short enough to lead to a recording deal, but the album that resulted, self-titled “shocked” Elektra Records. The acoustic performance suggested folk-influenced music, the outcome was a rock alternative. According to Preven states, “They thought they were buying a red car and we gave them a blue one.” The label failed to endorse the album, and they eventually ended the group.

The band signed with Island Records in January 1996 after its president, Chris Blackwell, saw the band play at the Roxy. The band produced their second full- album, Wacko Magneto, with producer Dave Jerden in 1997. The band promoted the album by going on to tour with No Doubt, Weezer, Failure, and Better than Ezra. In 1998, they made a third and final, more radio-friendly album, Wonderland Park. Ednaswap disbanded after the album in 1999.

Was Natalie Imbruglia's Torn a cover?

Arguably Natalie Imbruglia’s biggest tune of all time, Torn, was ingrained into our minds in 1997 when it was released. However, we were left in a state of shock when we found out that it was actually a cover of another artist’s song.
