Born in Toronto She has the father of Canadian TV producers Milan Chvostek (The Nature of Things) and journalist Isobel Warren. Her first work was working for the Canadian Opera Company when she was just seven years old. She began her career in the field of music by singing as a member of The Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus and appearing in television shows featuring Anne Murray and Tommy Hunter. She played the violin alongside her father and took part in her mother’s collection in Canadian popular songs. When she was 14 years old, she began playing around with audio recording and multitrack composition using a tape recorder as well as a house filled with instruments and objects to create noise with. At 16 , she started writing songs and performing them that were accompanied by guitar. She relocated into Montreal at the age of 15 to pursue a degree in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts at Concordia University and, in 1997 she released her debut album 1am-5am. She started her singing and songwriter career by opening of Dar Williams, Penny Lang, Veda Hille, Kinnie Starr, and Tegan and Sara and began performing in Canada playing along with Rae Spoon, Po’ Girl, Bob Snider and numerous others. When she joined The Wailin’ Jens in November the group toured through North America, the UK and Australia as well as The 2006 Edmonton Folk Music Festival, with a special mainstage performance featuring Bruce Cockburn. She made multiple performances in A Prairie Home Companion, which included an appearance on a PBS show of Great Performances, live at Tanglewood with Garrison Keillor and Meryl Streep as well as a collaboration in a collaboration with Keillor along with Bonnie Raitt.
The self-produced debut full-length album Full Stop in 2000 was listed as the number 7 on the campus radio national charts. In the same year, she worked along with Ned Bouhalassa to produce Bija which was an electro-acoustic experimental project. The group was nominated for in the CBC major break award and then released Water in 2003, with help of The Canada Council. In 2005, she released an unplugged solo EP named Burned My Ass, hit the top spot at No. 1 in the category of roots on the campus radio national charts. It also helped her find her a gig with the folk/roots harmony duo The Wailin’ Jennys which she sang alto as well as played mandolin, guitar and violin. The songs she wrote for the repertoire of the band are “The Devil’s Paintbrush Road”, “Swallow”, “Apocalypse Lullaby” and “Firecracker”, all of which are on the band’s June 2006 album, Firecracker, produced by David Travers-Smith. She quit with the Jennys for good in 2007, and decided to pursue music composition and solo performances.
