It was released by the publisher in English in the form of The Crime and the Silence Resolving the Massacre of Jews in Wartime Jedwabne (2015). The French version, Le crime et le silence has been awarded the European Book Prize in 2011.

The writer Julian Barnes, one of the judges for the 2010 European Book Prize, describes her work to be “more than a book of memory. It is also a book about forgetting, about the pollution of memory, about the conflict between the easy, convenient truth and the awkward, harder truth. It is a work that grows from its journalistic manner and origins into the powerful writing of necessary history.”

To respond to Jan. Gross’s account of the Jedwabne massacre Neighbors: The Devastation of the Jew Community of Jedwabne, Poland (2001) The Polish government launched an investigation under the direction of prosecutor Radoslaw Ignatiew of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN). Bikont started her own journalistic investigation by interviewing a variety of individuals from Jedwabne as well as survivors’ families and people who lived in the city at the time Gross’s book was released. Her work was expanded into a non-fiction book My z Jedwabnego (2004, “Jedwabne: Battlefield of Memory”). The book was published by the publisher in French with the name Le crime et le silence (2011) and was awarded the European Book Prize. The book was released in English in 2015 under the title The Crime and the Silence The Crime and the Silence: Confronting The Massacre of Jews in Wartime Jedwabne.
