English botanical artist, collector and photographer Anna Atkins was the first person to illustrate a book with photographic images. Her nineteenth- century cyanotypes used light exposure and a simple chemical process to create impressively detailed blueprints of botanical specimens.
How did Anna Atkins create her Cyanotypes?
What is the Cyanotype process? To capture her photographs of algae, Atkins first applied a mixture of UV-sensitive iron compounds to plain paper. After the paper dried, she placed a dried botanical specimen and a label, written on a piece of translucent oiled paper, directly against the newly light-sensitive paper.
