Cleeves lives in Whitley Bay and is widowed, having two daughters.

In 2014, Cleeves received an honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Sunderland. The year 2015 was the same. Cleeves chaired the programming of The Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival and the Theakston’s Old- Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award. She was nominated to win The Dagger of the Library UK Crime Writers’ Association Award for her collection of work published that was published in British library libraries (UK) In February of 2019, Ann Cleeves appeared on Desert Island Discs.

2013 was the year that Red Bones has been adapted with David Kane for BBC television as the debut episode of the television series Shetland which starred Douglas Henshall as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez. The 2014 episodes were inspired by Raven Black, Dead Water as well as Blue Lightning.
