Helfrich was born at Windhoek, Namibia and Weinheim, Germany where she received piano lessons. After her national success at the Jazzt Festival in 1987, she attended the University of Freiburg and then in 1989, she went to in the Amsterdamse Hoogeschool for the Arts. At the time, she received an award at the Hoogeschool in New York with Kenny Barron and Larry Goldings.
In 1996, Helfrich formed the trio together with John Weidenmuller and Jochen Ruckert The trio released their debut album, You’ll See, in 2000, along with the guest Mark Turner. In 2002, she toured in a group featuring Martin Gjakonovski and Dejan Terzic (jazz drummer).
