In this period, Anja was more interested in various sports that attracted her attention. She attempted diving at age fourteen , and then jazz dancing shortly after. It was at this point when she was fifteen , that she was introduced to bodybuilding by her boyfriend.

But, she was unable to participate because of an unplanned pregnancy. However, she continued to train during pregnancy to preserve her strength and endurance and to take part in competitions after her pregnancy. In January of 1991, Anja Langer gave birth to her son who she was named Elija. After that, she put aside bodybuilding and collaborated together with Bill Reynolds to write her book on bodybuilding, exercise and nutrition titled The Body-Flex-Body-Magic. The book was published at the time of publication in United States. The author also appeared on the stage for bodybuilding as a guest poseur, displaying an elongated body than she did during her time of competition. In 1993 and 1994, she was a part of two productions that were staged at Stuttgart, Germany. Between 1995 and 1998, she ran a gym and then shifted to fitness training, personal consulting and modeling. The year 2000 saw her made the decision to come back to the spotlight of bodybuilding, and assumed the role of a public spokesperson of bodybuilding and its importance as a healthful sport. Langer was admitted into in the year 2011 into the IFBB Hall of Fame.

In high school, she took classes in graphic arts, and was playing regularly. When she finished the school, Langer decided to make her passion a profession at the period. She finished fourth at the German Championships, second Amateur World Championship in Madrid, Spain. The year 1985 was the time she took home her first Junior World Championships, and the European Amateur Championships and German Championships in 1986. When she turned pro, Langer decided that her primary goal in professional life was to earn the Ms. Olympia title, however, 1987 was a challenging time for Anja. Her father passed away the same year and due to that, she was unable to completely concentrate on her bodybuilding training. Despite this , she was able to place second at World Pro Championships, and second at the Olympia. After finishing 2nd at the Olympia, Langer decided to put her career in competitive sports in a halt. Langer chose to take a whole year off, and then compete during the 90 Ms. Olympia in hopes of winning the competition.
