Anis Hidayah is one of the most popular and richest Human Rights Activist who was born on November 7, 1976 in Bojonegoro Regency, East Java, Indonesia. Anis Hidayah was born the 7th of November 1976 in a small town located in the Bojonegoro Regency of East Java located in Indonesia. As a young girl she was aware of the fact that many of the community had left to work leaving their children in the care of their grandparents. She attended law school and went to Jember University in the Jember Regency and was a part of the Indonesian Islamic Students Movement (Indonesian: Pergerakan Mahasiswa Islam Indonesia (PMII)). in 1998 Hidayah was informed of the assault of a woman who was a refugee and her inability to pursue recourse. The victim resigned from her job, however, her attacker was not required to compensate her due to her breached contract, or face criminal charges. When the victim returned back to Indonesia there was no assistance or rehabilitation for her, which led Hidayah to finish her bachelor’s thesis about the hardships of migrants.
In the year 2011, Hidayah was awarded her Alison Des Forges Award from Human Rights Watch in Toronto to promote her cause for migrants and women. When the BBC began the 100 Women Series in 2013 which would discuss in depth the challenges facing women of the 21st century, Hidayah was one of the first women invited to be part of the program. The year 2014 saw her chosen from a list of 50 applicants, as the winner of Yap Thiam Hn Award, which acknowledges the efforts of human rights activists.
In 2004 Hidayah co-founded an NGOcalled “Migrant Care” to advocate for immigrants and Indonesians who work abroad. The organization pushed lawmakers to come up with reforms that would protect migrants and offers legal assistance to women who have been victims of brutality or abuse, such as circumstances that place them in debt or in servitude. They also keep an inventory of data and set up services centers in areas of significant migration to inform people on the risks as well as their rights. They also have a system in place to monitor workers and aid their families. Through protests, lobbying with legislators and using media to push for reform, Hidayah has become one of the most well-known advocates for Indonesia’s migrant workers. In 2012, the Indonesian Parliament approved the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, beginning to tackle the issue.

Hidayah believes that enough hasn’t been done. Authorities are slow to act when abuse occurs. In the run-up to the 2014 elections, it was promised that policies would control trafficking agencies, reform worker protections and improve to legal aid for migrant workers. Hidayah argued that allowing the death penalty to be carried out in Indonesia, directly impacted the ability to negotiate for release of Indonesian workers abroad. Her concerns were substantiated when two domestic workers in Saudi Arabia were executed without prior notice. In response in 2015, the government announced plans to place a ban on migrant workers. Hidayah spoke against the plan, arguing that discrimination against migrants, which restricted worker’s rights would not solve the problems they face. Instead, she urged the government enact laws which required reasonable working and living conditions for workers, restricted their mistreatment and gave them opportunities to improve their economic conditions. In 2016, Hidayah urged lawmakers to create regulations that would eliminate recruitment fees and would require true employment conditions to be disclosed to workers.
