Angelique Widjaja is one of the most popular and richest Tennis Player who was born on December 12, 1984 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Angelique Widjaja (Chinese: Huang Yi Lin ; pinyin: Huang Yilin ; born 12 December 1984) is a retired Chinese Indonesian tennis player. She was the champion of junior tennis in Wimbledon during 2001 beating Dinara Safina. She reached a high of No. 55 within her WTA singles ranking in the month of March and then a record-breaking No. fifteen in WTA doubles in February. She quit the professional circuit in 2008.
She had a lot of success in her junior career. She was the winner of the singles event in the championships for juniors held at Wimbledon beating Dinara Safina 7-5, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. By winning her name was the only Indonesian to win a title at Wimbledon. She was the winner of the doubles tournament at the Australian Open Junior Championships, in partnership with Gisela Dulko. In 2002, she also took home the singles title at the Junior Championships held at the French Open. She reached a high junior ranking of No. 2. She also received an invitation by the “Hong Kong Tennis Patrons’ Association” to take part in The Hong Kong Ladies Challenge in January 2002.
Widjaja represented Indonesia at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, collecting a silver medal in the women’s doubles with partner Wynne Prakusya, and also the gold medal in the team event.
2002 was her most successful year in Grand Slam singles competition, reaching the second round at three consecutive majors. At the French Open, she defeated Jill Craybas in the first round. She was beaten by Evie Dominikovic in the second round. At Wimbledon, she beat 15th seed Anna Smashnova in the first round, before losing to Meilen Tu in round two. At the US Open, she beat Anna Kournikova in the first round, and was eliminated in the next round by Stéphanie Foretz.
One of the initial WTA Tour tournament she won was in 2001 at the Wismilak International held in Bali which was which was a Tier III event, which she competed in at the age of 16 with the basis of a wildcard. It was her first time as the most youthful Indonesian ever to ever win an WTA Singles championship. Her WTA singles rank prior the event was 579. 579. She was the lowest-ranked tennis player to take home an WTA singles crown.
