She is most well-known as a presenter on Australian radio She has hosted Mornings at Triple J, the National Evening Show on ABC Local Radio, and Breakfast on 702 ABC Sydney. She also works as a writer, podcaster, facilitator, interviewer, MC and vocalist. She hosted with Australian comedian also known as radio host Wendy Harmer a holiday season version of the Breakfast Show on 702 ABC Sydney.
The year 2001 saw Catterns came back to the ABC and this time it was to ABC Local Radio or what she calls “the grown up ABC”. Catterns was a 702 ABC Sydney breakfast presenter and was later the most popular Sydney breakfast host in the December ratings survey of 2004, temporarily taking over the popular Alan Jones from 2GB.
In 2003, Catterns conceived the ABC 702 ‘Knit-In’, harnessing the knitting prowess and goodwill of 702 listeners, in collaboration with the charity Wrap with Love, for an annual knitting event at ABC Headquarters. The ‘Knit-In’ has been an annual ABC event ever since. In addition to her involvement with Wrap With Love, Catterns is an ambassador, volunteer and supporter of the charity Habitat for Humanity Australia and The Public Education Foundation.
During her time at 702 Sydney first presenting ‘Breakfast’, Catterns temporarily displaced prominent Australian radio broadcaster Alan Jones in 2004 to achieve number one in the listener survey ratings. Catterns has also held broadcasting roles at Australian commercial radio stations 2SM and Vega 95.3 in Sydney, 2UE and at WKYS in Washington DC. Her popularity as a radio broadcaster is often attributed to her “perfectly measured combination of intellect and personality”, her listening and interviewing skills, and a voice described as being “smooth as chocolate” (The Sydney Morning Herald) or “as if her vocal cords have been marinated overnight in plum brandy and golden syrup” (Elle Magazine).
Relocating to Australia Catterns was a part of Triple J as the full-time morning show’s announcer. Triple J had begun to broadcast across the country and had recently launched the ongoing “Unearthed” initiative. On Triple J, Catterns aired an assortment of unforgettable and well-loved interview with people like David Bowie, Michael Hutchence, Jeff Buckley and then the then Prime of the country Paul Keating. Catterns later hosted the drive show on Triple J before moving into ABC Local Radio, presenting the evening show throughout Australia (from ABC Studios in Lismore). The year was 1979 and Catterns secured the top spot as one of the four initial reporters on the wildly popular children’s Logie award-winning TV show Simon Townsend’s Wonder World. The show was famous by its fun-loving and imaginative reportage style, but it also dealt with more serious problems from time to time.
In the early 1980s Catterns was a part of in the mid-1980s with ABC young network Triple J, as presenter and producer for the morning show of the radio station that was at the time Sydney-only. She then left Triple J for a short period on commercial radio and went on to host morning shows on 2SM. Catterns was reportedly fired from 2SM within just 10 months of unjustified reasons. She later admitted that, “I was told I was too intelligent for our audience and that women don’t like listening to other women on radio”.
In 2002 he and nine other veterans were flown back to Papua New Guinea for the 60th anniversary of the battles along the Kokoda Track, commemorated with the unveiling of a monument at Isurava by then Prime Minister John Howard.
