Benton began to launch Black Web 2.0 in August 2007 when she launched Black Web 2.0. It is said that the site was launched out of her frustration to find information on what Blacks were doing in technology both from an entrepreneurial/startup and corporate perspective. The site quickly built a community within Black tech enthusiasts or early adopters offering the Black community a platform where they can be heard, and recognized. Markus Robinson, a partner on the site and COO from 2010 on was an important player in the growth of the platform. In the beginning of Black Web 2.0 Benton served as the editor and principal writer on the site together with Robinson who utilized the platform to present and discuss important topics within Black Culture, technology, and how the two intersected. They often critiqued platforms and digital strategies employed by African-American media companies and predicted trends in this area, and as a result they quickly emerged as the top experts in the area.

In June of 2011, Benton started its first NewME accelerator group located in Silicon Valley. The key figures who participated as speakers, mentors, or as supporters comprised some of the tech industry’s top executives; Mitch Kapor, Ben Horowitz, Vivek Wadhwa, Google, Twitter, Andreessen Horowitz Facebook and others. The program was responsible to raise the issue of the diversity of the technology business for females and ethnic minorities. A few participants of NewME have gone into venture capitalists themselves, including Kapor Capital, Andreessen Horowitz and TEDco.

Benton sold NewME in December 2018 though under her leadership the company helped hundreds of minority companies raise over $47 million in venture capital funding.
