Amy Elizabeth Biehl (April 26 1967 – August 25 23rd, 1993) was an American graduate of Stanford University and an Anti-Apartheid activist in South Africa who was murdered by Cape Town residents while a mob of blacks yelled anti- white slurs. Four of the men who were convicted of the murder have been pardoned by Cape Town’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
In 1998, everyone was forgiven from South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in which they acknowledged that their actions were politically motivated.
On August 25, 2010, on the 17th anniversary of Biehl’s death, a bronze plaque mounted on a stone was unveiled by the U.S. Ambassador, Donald Gips, and Biehl’s mother, Linda Biehl, at the Cape Town site where she was killed.
August 25, 2013, marked the 20th anniversary of Amy Biehl’s death and a ceremony was held at the Cape Town site where she was killed in Gugulethu.

When she drove her three friends back home to the township of Gugulethu near Cape Town, on August 25 1993, the mob dragged her out of the car and beat she to the point of death. The attack on her car that she drove was one of many instances of criminality on the NY1 highway the following afternoon. A group of youngsters toyi-toyed hurled rocks at delivery trucks as well as vehicles driven by white drivers. One delivery vehicle was tipped over and ignited after which only the arrival of police prevented further destruction. There was evidence to suggest that some belongings to the passenger and her were taken.
In 1994, Biehl’s parents Linda and Peter created The Amy Biehl Foundation Trust to create and empower young people in townships in order to prevent further violence. Two of the suspects who were found guilty of her murder were employed by the foundation to support its programmes. Her parents in 1999′ were recognized with an award called the Aline The Norman Felton Award for Humanitarian Service.
According to Rex van Schalkwyk, in his 1998 book One Miracle Is Not Enough, “Supporters of the three men accused of murdering [her]… burst out laughing in the public gallery of the Supreme Court today when a witness told how the battered woman groaned in pain.” (pp. 188–89.) Four people were convicted of killing her.
