While still a Santa Clara University freshman, Wagner started playing for the United States women’s national soccer team in 1998. She started 21 games and played in 23 of the Broncos’ games. She scored 10 goals and had 12 assists. She was named the Second-Team NSCAA All-American, the First-Team All-WCC, and the WCC Freshman-of-the-Year.
From 1999 to 2008, Wagner represented the United States women’s soccer team. Wagner appeared in 131 international matches and scored 21 goals. She also assisted 42 times.
Wagner was the number one pick at the 2003 WUSA Draft by the San Diego Spirit. The team finished in third place during the 2003 WUSA season with a 8–6–7 record.
