Alvis Woods, born August 8, 1953, is a former professional baseball pitcher. Between 1977 and 1986, he played in Major League Baseball for seven seasons. He was primarily a left-fielder. He threw and batted left-handed.

Woods had a great season in 1979. He appeared in a record-breaking 132 games and hit.278 with 33 extra base hits. He set career records for average (.300), home runs (15), and RBI (47) in 1980. He shared outfield duties the next two years with George Bell and Lloyd Moseby and Garth Iorg. He also played designated hitter.

Woods returned to the Minnesota Twins for the 1985 season, spending the entire year with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. He started 1986 with Toledo, but received a brief call-up in May, and again was brought up to the majors when rosters expanded in September. He became a free agent after the season, and subsequently retired.

Woods was the Opening Day roster player for the Blue Jays inaugural season. Woods was a pinch hitter for Steve Bowling in the fifth inning of the Blue Jays’ inaugural season. On the fifth pitch he was presented with by Francisco Barrios, a Chicago White Sox relief pitcher, he hit his first homer.

Woods was originally drafted in 1971 by the Montreal Expos, but he didn’t sign until he was drafted by Minnesota Twins the next season. Woods spent many seasons in the minor leagues, before being selected by Toronto Blue Jays in 1976 Major League Baseball expansion draft.

After appearing in 122 games as the regular Blue Jays right fielder, he ended 1977 with a.284 average.

Following the 1982 season, Woods was traded to the Oakland Athletics for Cliff Johnson. The A’s released him during spring training, and he re-signed to a minor league contract with the Blue Jays in July. He spent the next two seasons with the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs, and was released by the Blue Jays at the end of the 1984 season.
