He represented Israel at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Mandel holds the national record in both the 100-meter butterfly and 50-meter butterfly. Mandel won the 100-meter butterfly race at the 2009 Maccabiah Games. He still holds that record.

Mandel represented Israel’s Maccabi Kiryat Bialik Club from 2008 to 2012, and Hapoel Dolphin Netanya from 2012 to 2013.

Mandel competed in the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome, Italy. In that competition, he set a new Israeli record in both the 50 meter butterfly (23.90 seconds, 31st place) and the 100 meter butterfly (52.68 seconds, 44th place). In the 4×100 medley relay, he swam the butterfly time of 51.60 seconds, helping the team to finish in 17th place with a new Israeli record of 3:36:23 minutes, more than five seconds faster than Israel’s previous record, set in 2007.

Mandel swam at the 2009 Maccabiah Games, held at the Wingate Institute in Netanya, Israel. He won the gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly, setting a new Maccabiah Games record of 52.99 seconds.

Mandel broke the national record for the 200-meter butterfly at the 2008 European Aquatics Championships, Eindhoven, Netherlands. He did this in 1:59.79.79 minutes. This was the first Israeli swimmer to complete the event in less than two minutes. Mandel had to be among the top 12 swimmers in order to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Mandel finished 13th, only two hundredths of seconds slower than 12th. A few months later, however, it was discovered that Ioannis Drymonakos, the Greek swimmer who won the 200-meter butterfly, had used banned substances. He was suspended. Mandel was promoted to 12th and his participation in 2008 Olympics was confirmed by the Olympic Committee of Israel.

Mandel began swimming when he was six years old and started training at Hapoel Emek Hefer. He started racing in the backstroke and set youth records in both the 50-meter and 100-meter. Alon, aged 18, was recognized as an athlete prodigy and he delayed his mandatory military service to study chemical engineering at Michigan. He also trained with the University of Michigan’s varsity men’s swimming team, which included Michael Phelps, his coach, and Bob Bowman. Alon changed his primary stroke to butterfly while he was training in Michigan. However, he continued competing in backstroke at the University of Michigan. Mandel was awarded four NCAA First-Team All-American honors and three NCAA Honorable Mention All-American awards. At the 2011 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Szczecin, Poland, Mandel finished in 7th place in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 23.96 seconds, only three hundredths of a second slower than Guy Barnea’s Israeli record. In the 100 meter butterfly, Mandel set a new Israeli record of 52.12 seconds, finishing 12th. Mandel also was a member of two relays – the 4×50 freestyle and 4×50 medley – setting new Israeli records in both events.
