Tirunesh Diababa, double Olympic 10,000m champion, won the bronze medal with a 12 second improvement on her personal best. It was also the fourth fastest time ever recorded in history. Numerous national records were established, with 18 competitors setting personal bests. Some people questioned whether Almaz was doping due to the lax drug testing in Ethiopia and doping scandals that engulfed athletics prior to the Rio Olympics. British commentators Paula Radcliffe and Brendan Foster, both ex-world record holders in distance events were skeptical of Almaz’s performance.
