Allen Darrell McKnight, born 27 January 1964, is an ex- international footballer from Northern Ireland who was a goalkeeper in England, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.
McKnightmare was a nickname for McKnightmare during his West Ham United career. This was due to his many goalkeeping mistakes. McKnight was signed from Celtic in 1988 and made his West Ham debut against Wimbledon on September 10, 1988. McKnight, who was competing for the goalkeeper’s spot with Phil Parkes aged 62, played all 23 league games for West Ham during his first season. He lost 5-1 to Liverpool in his last league game, which saw West Ham be relegated from the Second Division. For his next game, a 5-1 loss to Liverpool, he had to wait 18 months.
McKnight joined Celtic in August 1986 and was joined by his Distillery colleague Anton Rogan, who had just arrived at Parkhead months before. McKnight did not play in any of his first-team games and was loaned to Albion Rovers in order to get experience with the Scottish game. McKnight was promoted to second choice keeper at Celtic after the departure of Peter Latchford. McKnight was the replacement for Bonner, who had been afflicted with a virus. He played in several Celtic games. McKnight made his debut on 26 August 1987 in a 5-1 victory away to Dumbarton in a league tie. He then played in three Old firm league matches, including a win at Parkhead and a draw at Ibrox. After Bonner’s recovery from illness, Bonner was able to regain his place in team. However McKnight’s 12 league appearances as well as 5 clean sheets were enough for the club to win its League Championship. McKnight was injured in May 1988 and played in the 1988 Scottish Cup Final against Dundee Utd. He won another winner’s trophy as Celtic won 2-1 at Hampden. McKnight moved to West Ham from Parkhead a few months later.
