Allan Ramsay, (born Oct. 15, 1686, Leadhills, Lanarkshire, Scot. —died Jan. 7, 1758, Edinburgh), Scottish poet and literary antiquary who maintained national poetic traditions by writing Scots poetry and by preserving the work of earlier Scottish poets at a time when most Scottish writers had been Anglicized.

In 1755 he retired from his shop to the house on the slope of the Castle Rock, still known as Ramsay Lodge. This house was called by his friends “the goose- pie,” because of its octagonal shape. He is buried at Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh.
