Appleton has been a keen practitioner of meditation since 2000. He has been mainly trained in the Buddhist tradition. Appleton has been working at the Spirit Vine Ayahuasca Retreat Center, Brazil since 2004, and has also found inspiration from the outside world of Buddhism. Reggie Ray, a contemporary Vajrayana teacher is his current teacher. He completed a MA in Advanced Psychotherapy at London’s Minster Centre in 2014 and now practices as a psychotherapist from Brighton.

In early January 2007, Appleton appeared in BBC America promotions for the fourth series of Cash in the Attic, even though he did not appear in that series. Since 2007, he has been one of the presenters for Escape to the Country on BBC television. He has also been host of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s late night concert series The Night Shift at London’s South Bank.

In January 2016, he appeared on BBC One’s Celebrity Mastermind, where he came joint second with 21 points, with a specialist subject of 20th-century European classical music.

Appleton is gay and out. He came out at university. Appleton admits that he was only able to accept his sexuality while he lived in Germany and Poland. He converted to Buddhism in 2000 and now teaches meditation at retreats and classes throughout the UK, including on Holy Island, where he calls home. He is also the founder chairman of Shoreditch Morris Dancing Society. Appleton can speak four languages, including English, French and German, as well as Brazilian Portuguese and a little Polish.

Born to Peter and Sally Cooper (née Cooper) Appleton in Royal Tunbridge Wells. The younger of two sons. Alistair was raised in Lee-on-the-Solent (Hampshire). He sang in the St Faith’s church choir as a boy. He graduated from St John’s College in Portsmouth with ten O-levels as well as three A-levels. He studied English Literature at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, 1988.

Appleton returned to the UK in 1999 and appeared on Sky’s Hot TV (2000-03), Five’s House Doctor (1900-03), BBC Two’s Rhona (2001), the Travel Channel’s Travel On (192001), BBC One’s Garden Invaders(2001), Cash in the Attic (205-02), BBC Food’s Stately Suppers (2006). Appleton also did some acting, including a role in Footballers’ Wives, during

2002. In 2005 he completed The Man Who Drank the Universe, a short documentary on the entheogen ayahuasca, an ancient plant brew from the Amazon.
