Alina Pienkowska Biography

Alina Pienkowska is one of the most popular and richest Nurse who was born on January 12, 1952 in Gdańsk, Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland. Alina Barbara Pienkowska, 12 January 1952 – 17 Oct 2002; her surname is often misspelt as Pienkowska), was a Polish free trade union activist. She was also a senator for Gdansk (1991-1993 Solidarity Parliamentary Club). She was involved with the founding of Solidarity and was a member its organizing committee.

Pienkowska was a shipyard nurse from 1991 to 1991 when she was elected senator for one term. Later, she and her husband joined the Freedom Union party, which is led by Tadeusz Mazowiecki, post-Communist Poland’s first freely elected Prime Minster.

Pienkowska died on 17 October 2002, reportedly from cancer.

The main character of the 2006 film Strike recreates many of Pienkowska’s actions and words.

Pienkowska was born to a father who worked at the Lenin Shipyard. He had also participated in the December 1970 workers’ strike. She was a young widowed mother of Sebastian, working as a shipyard nurse in 1980. In the 1970s, she was one of the founders of the underground Free Trade Unions of the Coast. For The Coastal Worker underground journal, she wrote health articles mainly about shipyard safety and rising accidents rates. The August 1980 strike began on the 14th, following the firing Anna Walentynowicz. Pienkowska, the nurse, was responsible for communicating with the outside world about the strike, which eventually spread to the Baltic coast, and the massive wave of strikes in Poland. Jacek Kuron, a member of the Workers’ Defense Committee (KOR), in Warsaw was her first call. She was referred to as a “firebrand” by the press, and she admitted that she was moderated in order to avoid Soviet intervention.

Pienkowska grabbed her loudspeaker as workers began to leave. She passionately spoke out about the need to continue the strike to ensure that solidarity strikes by other factories with the shipyard were not abandoned. Walentynowicz and she were able to close the gates. However, many workers returned home the next day, often at the insistence their wives. The strike was saved. Pienkowska was one of the original 21 demands made by the Interfactory Strike Committee on 17 August 1980. This led to the Gdansk Agreement of which she was a signatory.

In 1998 she became a member of the city council in Gdańsk and was active in local politics and in health issues until the end of her life.
