Akhil’s debut film as a full-fledged lead was V. V. Vinayak’s Akhil (2015). In order to prepare for the role, Akhil enrolled in a stunt workshop with his personal trainer Kicha and attended workshops in Thailand for two months. Produced by actor Nithin, the film began production in December 2014 and featured him alongside fellow debutante actress Sayesha Saigal. The film released to poor reviews, and despite expectations, it was a disaster at the box office. Following this, he went on a two-year hiatus. His second movie Hello, was directed by Manam’s Vikram Kumar. It released on 22 December 2017, along with Middle Class Abbayi and turned out to be a below par grosser at the box-office, despite garnering good reviews. Akhil’s latest project, Mr. Majnu, is directed by Venky Atluri and co stars Niddhi Agerwal. It released on 25 January 2019. Currently he’s working on his fourth film titled as Most Eligible Bachelor, starring Pooja Hegde and produced by Geetha Arts Bunny Vas and Vasu Varma, directed by Bhaskar (director). Most Eligible Bachelor’s first look is all set to release on 08 February 2020.

Akkineni is the son of actors Akkineni Nagarjuna and Amala, the grandson of actor Nageswara Rao, and half-brother of Akkineni Naga Chaitanya. His sister- in-law Samantha Akkineni is also an actor. Akhil pursued acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute before making his debut in films in 2014 through a cameo in Manam. His first film in a lead role came in Akhil (2015).

As an infant, Akhil debuted in his father’s production, Shiva Nageswara Rao’s comedy Sisindri (1995), an Indian adaptation of Baby’s Day Out (1994). Later in his teens, Akhil pursued cricket and became a member in his father’s Kings team, in the 2010 celebrity Tollywood Trophy, which was a fundraiser for the Movie Artistes’ Association. His match-winning half-century in the final against Venkatesh Daggubati’s Warriors, saw him secure the man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series awards. Manam went on to become one of the most profitable Telugu films of 2014. Critics dubbed the film as a “classic” en route to it winning several awards, including Best Film at the Filmfare Awards. Akhil subsequently went on to make appearances in several commercials, notably for Karbonn, Mountain Dew, and Titan.
