Zweli Mkhize is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 2, 1956 in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Zwelini Mkhize was conceived in Willowfontein (Pitermaritzburg), on February 2, 1956. He is the fifth of seven children in a family that includes seven other children. At 26 years old, he received his medical degree from the University of Natal. In 1983, he completed his internship at McCord Hospital. Mkhize was hired at Pietermaritzburg’s Edendale Hospital the next year. Mkhize was forced to flee Swaziland, but he later settled in Zimbabwe. In 1991, he returned to South Africa and worked at the Themba Hospital in former Eastern Transvaal.

Mkhize was elected MEC for Finance and Economic Development KwaZulu-Natal in 2004 and also served as chairperson of the ANC’s National Education and Health subcommittee.

He served as the chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2009 until 2017.

He was chosen on 30 April 2009 to be the ANC candidate for Premier of KwaZulu- Natal. He was elected by the provincial legislature on 6 May after he defeated the DA’s John Steenhuisen for the post. Mkhize received 68 votes compared to Steenhuisen’s 7.

Mkhize was elected MEC for KwaZulu-Natal health in 1994 after the 1994 elections. The post he held for a decade was his longest tenure as a health MEC.

From 2018 to 2019, he was the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. From 2009 to 2013, he was the 5th Premier for KwaZulu- Natal. Mkhize is a member the African National Congress. He was the party’s Treasurer General between 2012 and 2017.

Mkhize was appointed to the African National Congress’ national health secretariat in 1991 upon his return from South Africa.

He was elected the provincial chairperson of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal in 2008. He was re-elected to a second term as chair in 2012.
