Kalfa received his early religious education at yeshivas in Kfar Maimon and Yamit in the Sinai Peninsula.

Career Highlights and Achievements

After the evacuation of Yamit due to the Egypt–Israel peace treaty, Kalfa took the initiative to establish a new yeshiva in Neve Dekalim in Gaza. Once he finished his national service, he became involved in running a boarding school in Kfar Maimon and co-founded a Jewish scholarly institution (midrasha) in Itamar. He also became a member of Hof Aza Regional Council.

Kalfa was part of the Bnei Atzmon settlement community in the Gaza Strip. When the settlement was evacuated in 2005, he took a leadership role, earning him the nickname “Mayor of the City of Faith”. Kalfa later was instrumental in the community’s move to the Shomria kibbutz and got elected to the Bnei Shimon Regional Council.

In 2013, Kalfa marked his entry into mainstream Israeli politics by securing the third place on the Tkuma list for the Knesset elections. The Tkuma party then allied itself with the Jewish Home party, and Kalfa received seventh place on the combined list. The party won 12 seats and Kalfa became a member of the Knesset. His political journey experienced some turbulence in 2015, when he announced his decision to leave the party following the announcement that ex-footballer and manager Eli Ohana would be included on the party’s list. Although he tried to re-join the list after Ohana’s withdrawal, he was denied the opportunity.
